It’s May!  Summer is right around the corner, can you feel it?

Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year in Buffalo, and our Blogger of the Month for May definitely agrees!  This month we are highlighting NKay of NKM Styling.  Girlfriend is killin’ it.  Not only is she is a blogger, but she is also lead singer of the band Bank Noise and she currently has her own clothing line available for purchase on her website, so make sure to check that out…the pieces are gorgeous!  Follow NKay on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and check out her interview below!

How long have you been blogging?

I started blogging in 2010, so its been 7 years now. My first blog was all about travel – I started it when I joined the Peace Corps in Mozambique. Then once I moved to Ghana a couple years later, I started blogging about travel but also merged it with fashion. Since I can remember, I always enjoyed creative writing.

What made you want to start blogging?

My passion for writing! I always felt like I had a story to tell, I mean essentially we all do. In high school my favorite subject was English, and I absolutely loved creative writing class. Writing was the only way to release my emotions. Whether it was writing music, a poem or a short story, I could not get enough of my pen and paper. Once I learned more about blogging, it was a win win situation.

What’s your favorite thing about being a blogger?

I’d say my favorite thing about being a blogger is being able to explore and connect with other people! Interacting with amazing humans is a bonus in this blogging game. As my following increased, so did my blog content. I realized I had more authentic topics to write about once I started collaborating with others. My blog is now an ecommerce site, but also a place where my readers can enjoy posts about style, healthy foods, and travel.

What is the meaning behind your blog name?

NKMstyling was originally NKM – N for Naa (my first name) K for Kwaley (my grandmother’s middle name) and M for Mark (my mother’s maiden name). These two women influence me, and I wanted three generations to be incorporated in the blog name.

What do you love most about living in Buffalo?

The summer! I am not a fan of winter because I hate the cold and the snow lol, but our summers are so much fun. I never get bored hanging out at Canalside or Allentown. There is always something to do, and its so nice to come out and enjoy the weather and people. My favorite area in buffalo is Elmwood Village – so many cute coffee shops, small boutiques, and other places to hang out with my friends. Buffalo has come a long way, and I’m proud of this city!

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

I love food so this is a tough question, but recently I’ve had a food crush on Betty’s. Brunch is my fave….

What are your favorite seasonal activities?

For me its all about warm weather fun. I enjoy anything outside, especially going to the beach! Summer concerts too, are my thing. This summer I’ll be performing with my band, so its going to be the perfect time for people to get out and enjoy the nice weather and music!

What is your favorite neighborhood in the city?

Hmm…..I’m gonna say Elmwood Village. Its always something going on there, and its one of my favorite neighborhoods to take a walk and just explore the beautiful architecture.

What advice would you give to people who would like to start a blog?

Just do it! In all seriousness though, find a topic or area you are passionate about. The only way to have an authentic, successful blog is to be true to who you really are. I think sometimes new bloggers look at what the ‘established’ bloggers are doing — but its not them. Find your niche and branch off that. To me, that’s the most important rule of a blogger!
